Nigeria Medical Doctors: The Brains behind Quackery in Nursing Profession in Nigeria
It's no longer news that medical practitioners in Nigeria who have their private establishment or work for some mushroom private establishment endanger the health of the populace by breeding murderers in the guise of training nurses baptised as auxiliaries. As if the damage isn't done to the extent of them refraining from such unwholesome behaviour, they go further to admit and broadcast the application process, charge these girls amount ranging from thirty thousand to fifty thousand naira for the two year duration of training plus the provision of soft drinks, cabin biscuits, garden egg etc by these girls (trainees) to the doctors training them.
These evil acts are perpetrated by the well to do personalities in the medical profession who should be at war with malpractice and unethical behavior but go on to champion the evil act and claim skills are more needed than theory in Nursing profession and not certificate and what a trained and licenced registered Nurse can do a quack can do it better!
These doctors go on to use these girls as trainees by teaching them how to give injections, conduct delivery of neonates, hospital cleaners, house maids and errand girls. Among the hospitals that perform such illict training and endangering of the lives of innocent Nigerians is one Precious Specialist Hospital, situated in Ondo State in Nigeria, a private hospital owned and administered by one Dr Michael Gbala the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) of the University of Medical Science Teaching Hospital, Laje Road Ondo, Ondo State. This is a man who is a rightful employee of the government that under the labour act and law isn't supposed to have a private establishment let alone work in a private establishment while gainfully employed by the government is seen training quacks, employing quacks and endangering the lives of the community at large.
Just as everyday is for the thief and one day for the owner, the act was revealed when one of the staff, Abayomi Funke uploaded pictures of three acclaimed graduates of the hospital cum University with Dr Michael Gbala presenting certificate to them, and the quacks (portrayed as Nurses) on their knees in uniform. One of the correspondents of Nurses Ambassadors of Nigeria in Ondo State, Nigeria informed the State National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) as well the Director of Nursing Service in the State of the illegal training in the private hospital cum School of Nursing and Midwifery/University and thus led to the closure of the facility.
It's indeed a shameful act that a personality like Dr Michael Gbala occupying such position in a government establishment can go to this extent and still walk the streets of Ondo State without prosecution and disciplinary action on his medical license of practice. Indeed this is one of the reasons Nursing in Nigeria has met serious road blocks and bottle necks in moving forward, fight against quackery and improving in terms of remuneration for the registered /licensed Nurses and Midwives, respect in the profession because when a full fledged Medical Doctor begins to mingle and produce quacks and endanger the health of the society he won't have regard for the profession he is pulling down let alone his practice.
